As of May 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 63,721, with 23,480 households and a population density of 542.44 persons per km². The total area is 117.45 km². It is currently Japan's top manufacturer of 使い捨ての浣腸 (tsukaisute no kancho disposable enemas). The city was founded on October 11, 2005 from the merger of the towns of Ōnohara and Toyohama, both from Mitoyo District.
