This is a discussion about 開く

Difference between 開く(ひらく and あく) and 開ける

How should I use each of the two forms of 開く?
Also, 開ける should be the potential form but I sometimes see sentences that are not about ability use 開ける too (for example "I opened the door" is 私はドアを開けた) so I'm quite confused about this

when used like in your example the word you're inquiring about is read as あける
ひらける is written the same but either the potential of or an intransitive form of ひらく

hiraku and akeru are used mostly transitive. i.e when you open a door
aku and hirakeru on the other hand are intransitive

look up the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs if you aren't familiar with the terms
