2. Kanun (instrument)The Qanun is a string instrument found in the 10th century in Farab in Iran. The name derives from the Greek word "κανών," which means rule, norm, principle. Its traditional music is based on Maqamat. It is essentially a zither with a narrow trapezoidal soundboard. Nylon or PVC strings are stretched over a single bridge poised on fish-skins on one end, attached to tuning pegs at the other end. The kanun, especially in ancient Greek times was known as the psaltery.
