First is Hiragana alphabet, I guess.
2nd, when you search "te" with jisho search bar, it will include a link to TaeKim's guide to japanese grammar. It has small grammar lessons included with some vocab. Slowly work on that through the entirety of "Essential Grammar".
After that is just the matter of getting exposure to real life material (TV, anime, weather report, news). If you dont have anything in mind, check out NHK "easy" version. It's a news site but a version that is written with simple japanese for children in japan and foreigner. Just search for "NHK news web easy".
TaeKim is heavy on the technical side. If you need free lesson with real life skit, NHK also have lessons. Search for "NHK easy Japanese".
Warning: NHK has awful reputation AS A NEWS SITE in Japan. But for other things, at least it's free and as far as I can see, pretty ok.

There are also readers with stories for beginners that avoid all but the more simple grammar points. These can allow you to test and apply your knowledge early on in the learning process without being overwhelmed quickly. In the end it comes down to knowing the meanings of words, phrases, concepts and how they're fused to form sentences and being able to put that all together in real-time. Will require heaps of repetition.
