It means "for drinking" as in "drinking water/wine/etc" as opposed to "washing water/cooking wine".

Also there will be many many examples of a simple 1 kanji verb and a kanji compound word that both describe the same action. 食べる/食事 to eat; 移す/移動 to move (something); 被る/重複 to overlap; etc
Their meaning wont completely overlap, but the point is that many actions/phenomena have a simple informal term and a formal/scientific/legal term for it, which is completely normal and should be expected. E.g. in English, doctors say "how is your bowel movement" instead of "did you poop today"; or "flatulenced" instead of "fart".
