は vs を

What do both of these mean in a sentence? What's the difference?

は indicates the topic of a sentence. を indicates the object of the sentence, or in other words the thing being acted upon by the verb.

私は犬を蹴りました。I kicked the dog.

は = subject
を= object (or direct object is what books say when studying)
