This is a discussion about 敗北者

Why the kanki for north (北)?

Was it a historic event, maybe that a group in the north was defeated? Or does it refer to another country that Japan won a wad against? Otherwise, it seems curious to me why associate a cardinal point with "defeated"

the character is supposed to show to men standing back to back, from this you can get associations like behind, retreat, lose etc.

the meaning of the cardinal direction comes from feng shui and related geomancy concepts where north is in the back when everything is being oriented with the south in mind
