早い is generally for "early"
速い is generally for "speedy"
These are based in the meanings of the kanji themselves. It's possible you'll see people lazily use one or the other for all meanings, but careful writers won't mix them up.

In modern days Japanese writing is the word 早い means both early and speedy.
For example 兎の走るスピードは亀のより早い。朝四時起きるのは早いですね。
Are they okay? If not what is the better way to differentiate between early and speedy?
