Wouldn't say the example is wrong in itself but perhaps it would cause less confusion down by the 6th meaning.

Yeah happens more often than not that the example sentences are not next to the corresponding meaning. Don't rely on that for learning.

Mistake in an example sentence
I think there is a mistake in the example for the first meaning of the word 差す: the translation is "to shine", but the sentence is "彼は雨の中を傘もささずに歩きつづけた。"
