I think it might be a mistake, its not a foreign word so it should be in hirigana.

It's marked as slang. It's not a true conjugation of 終わる, because that would be おわった, not おわた.

BTW @Chandler_Leroy there's no rule that only foreign words can, or should, be written in katakana. Foreign words are just one category of words that can be written in katakana.

It may be just for fun or to hightlight the verb of "finishing". So it is not a general rule that only the foreign words are written in katakana.

Why is this written with katakana?
It sounds like a conjugation of おわる, so I don't understand why you would write it with katakana. Is it a manga thing?
