I usually encounter this expression on news articles and can't seem to find a valid translation for it. Can somebody explain the grammar behind this? Leebo at 2019-03-25 00:31:50 UTC Do you have an example of a situation where you think no possible translations fit? It depends entirely on context, but I would say in news articles, my first guess would be the "to regard as" or "to suppose" meanings. FruitChinpoSamurai at 2019-03-26 16:20:02 UTC Hey, so I found the grammar on Tae Kim's guide: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/complete/trying The article where I found the とする expression was this: http://easyjapanese.net/news/34a5deb02636e7fd7e49c6a1d4e172d2 Apparently, it means "trying to do something", as Tae Kim says. Leebo at 2019-03-26 23:21:06 UTC That's the first definition here on Jisho... so... well, okay, if you've got it now. Log in to reply.
