This is a discussion about

Conjugations for だ and です the copula

I am a American person learning Japanese and I was looking for the 'te' form of desu, but I couldn't find it. Usually, Jisho.org has conjugations for most verbs, but it didn't have conjugations for the copula (だ and です). I found some on this website and I thought it would be great if the conjugations could be posted for the copula on Jisho.org. http://www.japaneseprofessor.com/reference/grammar/conjugations-of-the-japanese-copula/

I think it's misleading to think about だ and です as the same word, but alright. Jisho.org already links to some grammar articles if you search for it. (the tofugu blog entry doesn't exist anymore btw, pls fix)
And maybe somehow the bottom two parts of this article would also be good if you're reading the other Tae Kim entries: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/polite

I mean, it's a matter of perspective. The "japanese professor" makes their life easier by supplying you with a whole table of conjugations and not really explaining them too much, but they will have to make amends at some other point in time, when it comes to explaining why you can't "conjugate in that way right here in this circumstance" at for the student seemingly random points. Not the best approach imo, but not wrong. I rather go with the more "raw" explanations from imabi.net or tae kim's guide (which only covers some basic grammar, though, so imabi it is most of the time).

What's the difference between だ and です other than that one is informal/plain and the other is polite? But thank you for the link.

I've learned in my Human Japanese app (slightly better than Tae Kim's guide in that it has pronounciation, but both are thorough) how to conjugate Japanese verbs, with all the exceptions and stuff. Sometimes I only know the polite form and I'd like to find the informal one with all the conjugations. I just don't understand why on Jisho.org, half the verbs have conjugations/inflections, but the other half Jisho doesn't write. Is it because those verbs are irregular? In that case, it would definitely help to have conjugations, especially for irregulars, since those are only sometimes conjugatable off the top of your head.

Jisho says "The word だ, and its polite form です, is similar to the English word 'is'." But I'm not sure why it's not written in the inflections?

why would you even bother to learn all forms for every verb?

you really only need to know the forms for 12 verbs(9 godan, the ichidan and the two irregulars)

everything else is just rinse and repeat

Yeah. I learned 9 godan, the ichidan, and 2-4 irregulars already. Sometimes I forget how to conjugate a word and need to look it up again.

Jisho is a great dictionary, but one thing that doesn't make sense to me is how some verbs are conjugated, but others aren't listed. I assume it's time-consuming, though I personally would add it just in case if I was an admin. But that still doesn't answer my question as to why some verbs have listed conjugations while others do not.

While many people think it's unnecessary, I think there are quite a few beginners using Jisho.org who don't know how to conjugate or know how to conjugate but haven't memorized conjugation rules 100%. It would make site more friendly to beginners to have conjugations. Even when I become a Japanese conjugation machine eventually, I think it would help other beginners.

@jakobd, thanks for pointing out the broken link. Will fix.

@CreativiTimothy, the reason for some verbs not having inflections is the same reason for so many things being unfinished on Jisho. I don't have a lot of time to work on the site :) I tend to implement features as a trial as to see if they work and then never finishing them completely. Adding inflections for all verbs, including だ/です is on my backlog.

to reply.
