Meaning of "man"

I understand how 慢 "man" is used in "gaman" and "jiman" but I don't understand how it relates to "chronic" 慢性 any ideas from avid kanji students out there?

Maybe because the condition is "lazy" and doesn't want to go away? Haha

Seriously though, one of the definitions of it on this page is 長引く (to be drawn out), so I think that would apply in this case.
