This is a discussion about 一つ目

"First in a series" definition

Would it be appropriate to refer to any type of series?
For example - a first volume series of a manga? a first episode of a series of anime? etc.

In casual conversation it would be fine to use the general counter つ for things like this that have their own dedicated counters.

Episodes of anime can be counted with 話 (わ) and so you can say 一話目 (いちわめ) for the first episode.

But like I said, if you're just chatting with someone, 一つ目 is not strange.

For more serious situations, like if you're going to write a formal document, you should check what the specific counting style is for a given type of object.
