This is a discussion about

Is this really ever used as a word by itself?

I haven't been able to find any example of that. There's a book that says that it is only used in compound words: https://books.google.com/books?id=QcrXBQAAQBAJ&lpg=PT75&ots=Jbh0fWM5pI&dq=%22%E5%A3%AB%22%20is%20a%20word%20by%20itself%20in%20a%20sentence%20in%20japanese&pg=PT75#v=onepage&q&f=false
-- is this an error on the site? or do I not understand how it's represented here?

Did you try looking it up in a monolingual dictionary?

https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/%E5%A3%AB_%28%E3%81%97%29/#jn-92377

It gives some examples, including 同好の士, which has its own entry on Jisho as well.

But just because something in the dictionary doesn't mean it's worth learning how to use it. I would recommend against trying to use this as a beginner.

Thanks. Also, found got a good answer with more examples here: https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/94868/how-to-use-%e5%a3%ab-in-a-sentence-as-a-word-by-itself

Personally, it is helpful to have more context in learning anything. 士 is a very useful Kanji, most commonly used as a suffix, yet it is good to know it's broader meaning so I don't get stuck in a rigid definition when first learning.
