Interpretation

It seems that this word refers to the physical object that food is eaten off of, not to be confused with how English refers to a recipe or meal that has been prepared as "a dish."

That would be 料理. Yes, it can just mean "cooking", but also equates to what we'd call a dish.

材料に手を加えて食べ物をこしらえること。また、その食べ物。

Maybe you already knew that... when I read your post, I thought you were asking what word to use for the other kind of "dish."
