Question about "not only, but also"

When constructing a "not only, but also" sentence, how does one know whether to use だけでなく(て)~も or だけじぉなく(て)~も? I'm missing something here....

Thanks for any help.

Also, how can one know when to add "て" to the phrase. I see the "て" added when だけ is preceded only by a noun....
