Wild card search not working? -> ?*滅

Searching for ?*滅 gets me 3 pages of results (54 total), but 殲滅 is not in there, even though it should be, as far as i can tell. Can anyone explain why?

Exactly. That actually proves my point, since 殲滅 is clearly in the database.

I've discovered that it does show up when you put another wildcard at the end.

This seems very strange to me, as this is not necessary with most words, to my knowledge.
