Jisho App

I've been longing for the android app that works offline. I've also read some threads about this, and they were made a long time ago, so I figured I'd ask again. Is there any progress with the app? I would pay for it. Your service is so good. Thank you for making Jisho.org!

I agree. I was also wondering if there was an app. Great site indeed.

I would also gladly pay for a Jisho app, there should be a kickstarter or something for it. I love this site, it's my daily companion for my Japanese translations.

Sorry, there's been no progress on an app for iOS or Android :(

We would like to make one but do not have the time or resources unfortunately.

And if we collect some money with Kickstarter, would you find time then?

I... hmm.

So, I'm not really gonna hold my breath on this, and I can't necessarily promise anything on my end either, but...

I'm currently a Computer Science student that's been looking for a "project" of sorts, as I really need to begin building my portfolio for when I start job hunting in about six months to a year. This idea is definitely intriguing to me.

We don't have to completely discuss it here obviously, but if any of the Jisho devs want to pass around the idea and get back to me here, I'd be happy to provide contact information and discuss the idea further?

If I actually did do this, I'd probably start off working on an Android release first, and would likely need to go through quite a few iterations and in-house testing with you guys before it got released to anything at all. If you guys liked the overall product (including the users?), I'd do my best to re-make/port it to iOS if possible as well.

Oh, and probably most importantly, I would do this free of charge. :P

This wouldn't be a money-making thing for me at all. I'd probably just post it as Open Source code on GitHub or something, but we can discuss all of that further if this moves beyond this post.

I'd need to work out how licensing works, as I'm not familiar with those kinds of things, but honestly as long as I can have/show proof to any future employers that I actually wrote the software, that's all I'd ask. I might also want to list you guys as a reference if that was cool. Hahaha

Jisho has saved my butt a ton of times. So maybe, if I'm savvy enough, I can return the favor a little bit? Here's hoping. =)

Just wow, that app is incredible. Is it open source? I'm really interested in seeing how you did it and maybe helping in the way. Congratulations for an incredible app.

Yes I'm currently working on an offline app. But let's be honest, we're all here because of the wonderful Jisho. So, if the developers of Jisho can provide some data dump for the app to download it would be great! _^

@Celtic @surajkumarsau I really appreciate the offers to help develop an app. The unfortunate situation is that I barely have time to work on the site - and there's tons of work left before I'm even halfway where I want Jisho to be! Making offline apps would be a lot more work for me than just providing a data dump, even with great help from others.

Since all the data in Jisho comes from open source databases there is of course nothing stopping you from working on an app that uses the same data. But until I can commit considerable time and resources to such a project I don't want to embark on a project that I'm not sure I can finish to the standard that I'd want a Jisho app to maintain.

@surajkumarsau Your online app looks really cool! I like the different approach you've taken to displaying the entries. Just be aware that you need to display the license information for the data inside the app.

@Kimtaro: Kind of the response I expected, and am mildly pleased with it regardless as I can appreciate wanting to maintain quality standards! I might still piddle with the idea of making a dictionary app, but there's already a ton. This idea just seemed interesting because of the name that it would come with.

Thanks for the reply though. ^

@Kimtaro .. I've put words of appreciation for Jisho in the About section. But yes, definitely I'll put the license information for the data. But, can you post the license information in this thread which I can put in the app.

Thanks,
Suraj

Yo! I just found this. Can anybody tell me how to compile the GitHub project into an apk? I'm seriously having a hard time on compiling it, and I really like this app. Thank you!

I would pay $99.99 for an offline jisho app with good UI. No wait I'd even pay $100.
