or is it seen as a know it all? perhaps it is negative to search for this kind wisdom?

Other than 分かる "to understand, comprehend, etc.", this is the main verb used for knowing something (facts, people, etc.). Using it in normal conversation is not at all negative, unless it is part of a statement meant to be negative in meaning or through other words. The only case in which you wouldn't really want to use it is in a situation where the keigo ご存知 is appropriate, which isn't common if you are talking just to friends or to equals.
