It is most famous as the location of Matsushima Bay, one of the Three Views of Japan, and is also the site of the Zuigan-ji, one of the most famous Zen temples in Tōhoku, Entsū-in and Kanrantei. As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 16,504 and a population density of 305.40 persons per km². The total area is 54.04 km².
