Following the incorporation of Kaimon and Yamagawa (two towns formerly belonging to Ibusuki District) on January 1, 2006, and as of March 1, 2012, the city has an estimated population of 43,931, with 19,119 households and a population density of 294.82 persons per km². It covers 149.01 km² and shares a border with Ei, a town to its north.
