On New Year’s Day, I went to a department store in the morning to buy a fukubukuro (a special New Year’s mystery grab bag filled with discounted items, whose contents are unknown until opened). In the afternoon, I played fukuwarai (a traditional game where players try to place facial features like eyes and a mouth onto a blank face while blindfolded) with my relatives’ children. Later, we visited a shrine dedicated to the Seven Lucky Gods for our first Shinto shrine visit of the year. I feel like I brought in more than enough good fortune to start the year off right, so I’m sure it’s going to be a great one. — Jreibun
