"to and fro" is a set phrase. https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/to-and-fro
However, I could see a case for making the more common "back and forth" the first definition.

Their point was probably that "younger people" don't know about "to and fro" being a thing. Don't see why "to and from" would be better suited, though.
