This is a discussion about 場所

Kun x On

Why the readings of the kanjis here contrast in kun and on?
場 - kunyomi
所 - onyomi
Some rule, or aleatory case?

There are no real hard rules when it comes to reading kanji compounds. You should just learn their reading by heart. You'll come across of words that aren't just onyomi. 降灰, 会釈 etc.
Or take 朝刊 and 夕刊. They look so similar but 朝 uses its onyomi and 夕 uses its kunyomi.
