[BUG] Special characters in search treated literally

If special characters like '.' are included in the search, rather than encoding them and using them for searches, they are treated as standard URI components and lead to various 404 errors.

Furthermore, searching "x.html" searches for 'x', where the '.html' is treated as a literal file extension in the URI, rather than as part of the search. Most other . extensions lead to a 404 however.

Sorry, it's a long standing bug that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet.
