japanese are very polite. they don't praise themselfes. literally this means: "my cooking is bad but i hope you liked it".
失礼します also transletes to "excuse me", but it literally means: "i am rude"
one more use is すみません, which means "i'm sorry". but you can use it as "thank you" with the people you don't know. if someone holds the door, you don't use ありがとう but すみません.

Contradiction in translation
Hi everyone,
While I was watching a certain anime (Shokugeki no Soma) to be specific, and then this word came out and it was numerously translated as "Glad you liked it" but when put it in Jisho, it tell me the exact opposite (180 degree different meaning). It says "poor" or "ill-prepared".
Can someone please clarify it for me?
